Immortal

This thread's mainly for the benefit of newcomers to this fine hand-coded site, but old hands may discover one or two ideas.
If I've missed any tips or tricks you know, post em up and I'll edit em into the OP.

- First, since you only have text and emoticons to work with, avoid coming across like a schmuck with...
Firefox 2: http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-2.0.0.4&os=win&lang=e and once it's installed, grab the...
Aussie dictionary: http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/file/10801/english_australian_dictionary-0.2-fx and...
dictionary: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html?name=dictionary.com&sherlock=yes&opensearch=yes&a and...
thesaurus: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html?name=thesaurus.com&sherlock=yes&opensearch=yes&am plugins for your search toolbar.

Now when you're typing out a post, any typos or misspelled words get a red underline. Simply copy the word, pick Dictionary.com from your search engine pulldown, paste in the word and hit enter. Now you just copy the correct spelling (usually marked Chiefly British on that site), hit back and paste it over the booboo. It's quicker and easier to do than it might sound, believe me ; )

If you get the red underline for words you want to use all the time and you don't want to constantly be told they're wrong, just right-click the word and add to dictionary. Sweet.

- The only image hosting on the site is for your avatar and there's no [img] tag, so you have to get by with links to image hosting sites like http://tinypic.com/ or grab an account at http://photobucket.com/register.php?ref=login or somewhere like that for pics you want ready access to.

- Of course if you're lazy, you could try grabbing the Google image search plugin and just search for any images you want to post... it's a bit naughty to leech people's bandwidth like that, but any link posted here isn't likely to be clicked much more than thirty times or so.

- Tinypic's good for posting video, too. If you want to post audio, this site's pretty neat: http://www.supload.com/free-audio-hosting .

- When replying to multiple posts, if you're using Firefox, you can middle-click the reply links to open them in a new tab, which makes life a bit easier.

- In case you're wondering how I did the horizontal lines there, it's as easy as {quote}{/quote} - with the square brackets, of course.

- If you have anything to say to the Mods, you can just RTM (report to moderators) one of your posts, then explain how you're not actually reporting a post and stuff.

From nickeax:
- You can just right click the word in FF and it'll offer up some US spellink suggestions.
(Or right-click, Languages > Add Dictionaries... and get the Australian one - Kimmo)

- Type your title out in the post entry field. That way, the spell checker can do its thing on the title too. When you're happy with it, just highlight it and drag it into the title field.

- Count to 100 before posting if you're angry!

- If you edit a post more than once, you can just delete the old 'edited by...' message[s].

- Press CTRL F5 to refresh your browser's cache if you wish to test a new avatar, or see someone else's.

From schplade:
- Firefox users can get an addon to enter BBcode tags and stuff here: http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/491

From iamthemaxx
- Using Firefox, there is a neat plugin to let you resize the reply text box: http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3694
http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8287
This one's a bit less intuitive than the dead one. I thought it wasn't working cause the cursor doesn't change at the edge of text fields, but you right-click drag to resize the box, and if you want to move the box, double-click the field and its border flashes green. A left-click drag moves it, and another double click and the border flashes red and and you can use the scrollbar and highlight text again. It's pretty damn nifty. Check it out: http://i35.tinypic.com/2m32o0p.jpg

From mark84
- Just post https:// links as http:// , and people's browsers will simply redirect. Your link is now clickable.

From aioth
- Use a bit of logic when constructing polls; try to cover all the bases in your options and if you make em radio buttons rather than checkboxes, make em mutually exclusive.

From superfireydave
- Instead of crying about the (much improved) search, use Google and stick site:www.atomicmpc.com.au in with your search terms. Works a treat.

From Bastard Child (if memory serves)
- I think he was the one to show me this; to link to a specific post, get the link to the page, for example http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=4&t=3562&p=40 , then count down to the post you want to link to, for example http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=4&t=3562&p=46 . Snazzy.
If it's on the first page, just add &p=# , where # is the reply number.

Nice thread.

You can also use the Google Toolbar, but watch out because it seems to only show American spelling.

Instead of remember tags, you can install bbcodextra ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/491) then just select what you want to tag, right click on it, then go to bbcodextra, there will be a whole heap of tags you can use in there (only a handful work on atomic, but you'll have to remember which ones do and don't). Also if your only using it for atomic, you can disable the html menu and the xhtml menu.

I might see if I can edit it so its specifically geared to Atomic, if I have time.

oh yes

bbcodeextra is missing the ability to add custom tags (ie [ spoiler ])

The old add-in I had for firefox 1.5 doesn't work with 2.0

Read the FAQ. Your avatar file size is more than likely too big. Is it a .jpeg that you're trying to upload?
