Suggestion for magazine content

So I completed the Survey and there wasn't a chance to suggest idea's for new content! Ripped off - so I'll suggest it here instead.

I'd like to see a section dedicated to Multi-player gaming in the magazine. The actual stories could vary, for example, reviews of multi-player games, news on recent events (eg. WCG), upcoming patches/improvements, Multiplayer strategies, etc.

Just a thought.

Well... that's kinda tough. When we get games that have multiplayer content, we often get them so early that there is no real 'community' playing as yet. Games like that, we tend to test over small LANs.

And, for another thing, for every strategy we posted, there would be l33t gamer types telling us we are fag n00bs for even suggesting that tactic X is the best way to win on de_dust.

But thanks for the suggestion :)

It's still ok to make a suggestion David, i know i wouldn't mind pointers in any game i play, especially in team work.

Don't be afraid of those L337 12 year olds :)

GO GET EM!!

I'd love to see some multiplayer stuff in the magazine, especially if it kept me up-to-date on events I'm too lazy to find out about myself! :D

hmmm... interesting.

What kind of lead-time does the magazine have and would that have an impact on the accuracy or depth of information? I've been very solitary of late, spending my time with a certain white haired witcher, so I've been a bit out of the loop with regards to... well *ahem* basically everything that doesn't involve checking out Geralt's arse.

Commentary on what is essentially a highly dynamic, community-oriented area could be a bit dicey, but it's probably not impossible. Things like patch and update information I could probably largely do without, as you can get full change logs on the Intertron for your game of choice.

Multiplay is a bit of a tricksy beast sometimes. I'm mildly curious what the effects of the one dimensionality of print media might have on the concept of multiplay, considering fundamental to the idea is interaction between people. Part of the fun, for me, is interaction with other players outside the game (eg, discussion of matches, tactics and updates on forums or in-game chatting).

Events, however, now that could be very interesting :-) Your big gaming tournaments and stuff, particularly. Local LAN gaming events, that's probably going to be very targeted and therefore not appeal to a great range of people. I, for one, couldn't care a fig for LAN gaming events in Adelaide given I'm in Brisbane. But as I said, I've been very solitary of late, I'm probably the wrong person to be giving an opinion on that.

Still, there is the potential to introduce some of the wider concepts of community multiplay to an audience that may not necessarily be all that aware of some facets.

Ah yes, that is a truth.
Whilst strategising and tacticalising (I'm going to assume that's a word) are part of the fun of being a gamer, my personal preference is to participate in discussions regarding strategies and tactics, rather than read off the printed page. It's a little one dimensional, and I like picking people's brains for all the tasty bits inside :-)

Certainly. Especially if it's not so much a suggestion, as picking up a spelling or punctuation error from the magazine. *solemn* David loves reading those.

:-)

Depends on what part of the magazine you're talking about. Features and such can span a couple of months, with the calender of content booked to a certain point in time, but something like Scanner - which I look after - is obviously a month by month thing, and I'd imagine it to be one of the last things to be submitted, to keep the news as up-to-date as possible with what's currently online.

I'd imagine any multi player section of the mag would be alot like Scanner, being delivered at the last possible moment so it's still got that 'baked fresh in the oven' smell.

If you scroll down a bit in this thread - http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=3&t=2842 I've detailed what I think would make an interesting monthly section of the mag, dealing with one - admittedly huge and exciting - slice of multiplayer, MMOs.

There's a lot of room there to discuss and dissect the various persistent worlds (and politics of) out there, and some great debates about everything from MMO addiction to levelling, social dynamics et al. The beauty is, it doesn't need to be 'fresh' in the sense of news, but rather the 'big picture' stuff, or opinion pieces.

Just my 2c.

That part. That part right there. Right where I'm pointing.
Thanks for the insight, that's interesting to know :-)

Hey, I remember that post :-) I was going to reply at the time but I couldn't think of anything to say other than "I agree."

'Coz I said so :-)

I did say it probably wouldn't be impossible :-p It's a huge facet to the gaming industry, after all; there's got to be some kind of glowing, green goodness out there :-) Just... so long as it doesn't turn into a rambling commentary on various change logs, but I trust you guys and I am curious :-)
