Dear HQ

Here's an idea for an article: Building a PC based Video security system.

Not just what you can do with (say) a Swann card and some cameras, but how it compares to low end commercial/home off the shelf security systems.

Things to cover could include:

- camera types and minimum specs
- central camera monitoring
- video storage requirement considerations
- remote alert options
- securing against system theft
- likely cost saving vs a bought system

Great idea.

I'd buy a magazine with an article like that in it :-)

Hmm, that's not a bad idea, and Lord knows the labs could use more security than the nerf turrent and pungi-pit we have installed now...

Hmm.

+1 to that idea!

The remote alert option would be great for identifying who's at the door before answering. E.g. Pizza delivery or door-to-door church folk.

Extending this idea could lead to other uses/issues. E.g:
- webcam functionality
- unattended time lapse photography
- automated Google Maps photo uploading

May also be beneficial to explain how to avoid privacy issues (with neighbours etc.) too.

By remote alert I meant having the system trigger an SMS or email when recording is activated during certain times.

But having a door monitor would be a welcome feature too.

Being able to view the cameras from any PC on the network would be a big plus.
Not sure if this is easily achieved... unless it was embedded in an internally served webpage?
