The Little Subscription Offer That Couldn't

To my knowledge, yes, they have subtitles.

I must say, I'm baffled by this issue with foriegn language film. You guys must hate, say, Hardboiled, or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, or Ghost in the Shell.

Well speaking for myself David, A dvd would not entice me to subscribe at all. I am a geek nerd through and through, thats why I like Atomic. My wife on the other hand, she likes dvd's, but she doesnt read Atomic! If she wanted a foriegn film I would say go to Video Ezy and rent one. Personally I havent watched any of the films you mentioned and have no intention too either. I still have my Atomic t-shirt that sees more light of day than any dvd would.
The best foriegn film I have seen is Apocolypto. But to discuss dvd's seems somewhat out of place when my chief interest is tec. Next thing we know TV Week will be giving away RAM sticks! Has the world gone topsy turvy?:p

Virtuoso,

I feel your anguish but why not just keep subscribing, and with the money you save from not having to buy it in the shops (and the hidden costs of actually doing that), buy some tech that YOU want? Long time subscribers like us, despite guaranteeing a source of income, are probably not all that good for the profit margin or sales statistics compared to other methods of purchase.

Why would the marketing department care about us when they've already got us locked in for up to 2 years? As far as they're concerned we're already highly satisfied customers because we subscribe for so long.

Regardless of the cheapo DVDs on offer (which I WASN'T offered despite just resigning on for ANOTHER 2 more years! *glares*), you're still making a decent saving. Better yet, you're not affected by unforeseen price hikes at the retail stands..at least until the subscription period is over :D

I think JB are selling off 4GB USB sticks for ~$25 these days...

Regards.

P.S. I wouldn't mind some more stickers or an Atomic branded LED pen-light...

Of course these crap foreign movies have subtitles.

But there's about a hundred English language films, which I still haven't seen but should, which I'll be watching before I spend a couple of hours squinting at subtitled films.

Hell, I haven't even watched "Amelie" yet, which, is an A Grade life-changing subtitled film - from a country which has demonstrated it knows how to make films. So it's hardly likely I'm going to spend my hours watching unknown films from countries with the *cough* paucity of cinematic tradition *cough* of somewhere like bloody South Korea!

In fact, I'd rather watch a North Korean romance film directed by Kim Il Jong, just because I'd like to see how bad it is, than invest an hour in a crap South Korean gangsta-wannabe film like the two I've been offered by the magazine I have been loyal to for 6 bloody years.

See? GLC gets it. AND he understands Atomicans. These skills would be handy in, say, those who seek to market to us ;-)

Yes. My reason for not re-subscribing is to protest at the lamest re-sub offer ever in the history of shitting on loyal sheeplike subscribers ;-)

Take THAT, Haymarket! Five whole dollars off your bottom line! I'll bet your sorry now.

Roll on next month, and let's hope I am both in a newsagent and happen to see an Atomic magazine in there at the time.

Cheers Virt, Gimme the job I'll do it;-)

Seriously though, there is also the issue of taking the subscribers for granted. By that I mean, the only interest in subscribers is when they sign up.
The subscribers would be mostly hardcore loyal Atomicans who genuinely appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating the mag each month otherwise why would they subscribe?
There should be an effort made by marketing to make these people feel wanted for entire time of their subscription. NOT just when it’s renewed. What would be hard about a monthly subscriber raffle? Or special offers via email from your paying advertisers in the mag? I am sure ATI, Zalman, etc, etc, would cream themselves at getting "special access" for their products to be put in front of people who spend/waste serious money on products? Hell, i bet you could even charge them a premium rate for it?
Bottom line...Subscribers should feel appreciated all the time.
My 2 cents:)

You need a bigger LCD ;-) Why don't they offer DVDs which get good reviews in Atomic? There's a lot of crap English language DVDs out there too. Idiocracy anyone?

That was an ok movie but it's one of those ones where if your attention gets pulled away from the screen then you miss something and have to watch it through from scratch again.

Either way ewe are screwed. Your protest will cost ewe $$ and if ewe resubscribe marketing gets their way.
(that was your fault Virtuoso for bringing sheep into this! ;-) )

Doubtful. They still probably get that $5 but you end up paying extra due to retail outlet overheads.

...I do hope they get the point though: Don't shit on loyal subscribers or we'll find a WoW gamer fed purely KFC who hasn't bathed in a week that's is hyped up on stimulants to fart in your mouth while you're asleep and can do nothing! ;-)

C'mon Virtuoso, just resubscribe but for a shorter period...in protest :-)

Regards.

Look, guys, fair call if you don't like it. I'm sure there were people who didn't like the Star Wars giveaway, or the Age of Conan one. Hell, I thought the Babylon 5 one was pretty shite, but that's more to do with my 'feelings' for that show.

Given the popularity of asian cinema in these parts, I really am quite bewildered at why this offer has caused such angst.

We try very hard to offer a range of incentives to our subscribers. Something for everyone, from hardware to sci-fi to cheap deals and the rest. Frankly, I'm a little offended that people could even think we would be so dismissive of our subscribers, who - let's face it - are amongst our most loyal readers.

Well, I certainly did not want to offend you or anyone else at Atomic. I am sorry that you feel that way over my comments? I have the utmost respect for Atomic staff. However, your marketing department is different story. I can only go by my own experiences, which were not good to say the least. To be honest David, the only reason that I take the time to post here is because I am heard here. If only marketing would take the time and make the effort that you do I would still be a subscriber.

It's official, not next month but the month after, a snap of David in nothing but the birthday suit will be included for all new and current subscribers.

As well as it being posted online.

And giant banners of it printed and spread liberally throughout the city.

Hi All,

I agreed totlly with the OP. To add to this is the competition that you get with subscribing. I was on the rolling 6 month subscription.

Now if you are on this subscription you are only enthered into the competion the very first time you subscribe and thats it. Never again you are not entered when your subscription is auto renewed in 6 months. You cant even get the DVDs like the OP are talk about. These are only open to new subscription for 12 and 24 month subscriptions. And that is if your renewal comes up when the offer is around.. so most will miss it as it comes inbetweet your renwal dates.

To add to this it is the same for competitions. If you are on a 6 months auto renew you are not entered into competitions at all. You only get entered into competitions when you renew and so you get one entry to a competion once ever 1 or 2 years. And that if there is a competion on when you renew.

I was on the auto renew and they kept on sending me out letters to renew do you want to renew. I thought this strange as I was auto renew. So called them up told them I was on auto renew and also asked how do I get the DVD and was advised that I only get it for 12/24 month suscriptions and also found that this is the same for the comps. I found out someone screwed up and changed my to 12 month and now auto renew.

So I told them dont bother fixing it and will think about renewing.....I still have not renewed

As members we should be entered into all competitions and not just at subscriptions times and should get all bonus just sent out like the dvds.
