Hack Your Console

Thank you for what I found to be a great and informative article.

Even with my 18month old trying to turn the pages before I was ready I found this article thoroughly engrossing, not getting bogged down in technical jargon. I look forward to seeing more articles of this calibre.

Overall it was a great issue but for me this was the standout.

Yeah Jake did a great job, although there were a couple of things I would have liked to see pointed out.
Such as the XBox 360 drive flash does NOT unlock regions.

Fair enough.

Given the popularity of the subject, I've very tempted to do more in-depth follow-up features on each console. We'll be able to cover a lot of ground that way.

Well David, I look forward to a more in-depth follow up.

I wasn't aware that the 360 was region coded. Learn something everyday :)

Glad you enjoyed it! The possibility of a follow up "XBOX360 internals" or "Wii Internals" or "PS3 internals" or "NDS Internals" seems to be growing by the day!

I also really enjoyed this one, and would be looking forward to more. Maybe also (to flesh it out a bit) a console modding section, as some people have put windows, made laptops, watercooled the systems and such.

Especially seeing as an aftermarket case for the 360 is being made by Lian-Li, supposedly cheap enough (US$90), not to mention the replacement shells that are easy enough to buy.

TheFrunj, I had a chance to catch up with Lian-Li briefly while at Computex the other week (check the next Chippery for coverage) and the XBOX360 replacement case looked very nice. The typical Lian-Li quality but also with that, it makes the XBOX360 a rather quiet experience... finally.

Yeah, I'm getting kinda sick of hearing the fans in my 360 ramp up when doing anything, makes it distracting during movies and such.

Thanks for the heads-up though, but now I'll have to wait for ages to read it :P

As David said, there is so much related to this topic that it could have filled the entire magazine. In fact I think there's several magazines worth.

You know I kind of miss Dan Rutter taking the consoles apart. The last was over a year ago when the PS3 was released.

I enjoyed the article, but was dismayed at the PS3 content, especially when the front cover says: "Unlock the power of your PS3,..."

PS3 content? "Thus far, only cursory attempts of 'hacking around' the hypervisor have been made", and a bit of fluff. Basically there was NOTHING!

I call disingenious magazine promotion.

To be fair, we did show you how to probe the API level commands out of the hypervisor at a kernel level. This is hacking in a very pure form, good sir. Just because it doesn't result in actual functionality of arbitrary code (as yet) doesn't mean it isn't hacking :). Granted, I can understand the frustration in not being able to "hack it to do XYZ" yet, but this is still the bleeding edge man. Early days!

Don't worry - we are working on something else for you guys who want MORE, behind the scenes. Watch this space.

No worries Z, the PS3 is still early days, so am sure that hax will be found.

Its just that I saw the mag on the stand, saw "unlock the power of your PS3" and thought 'cool! Just what I am after...'

There is actually a shortage in the country.
My store finally got some more back in yesterday.

All last week I had people calling and coming into the store asking for one. Unfortunately I had none, neither did my competitors.

Great read, even if I don't own a console (not counting a dead C64).
