Issue 89 GEECCHIC: does not compute

G'day all,

Was reading 89 on the can - great job on the cover btw. The GEECCHIC article got my attention because it had some small inconsistencies and "does not compute" bit, which I hope Zara can address.

Firstly, the 3rd level cache - it says the core is sending instructions to the L3 cache, shouldn't that be data? And this is going beyond my original premises, but how does this help? I am not aware of any CPUs "losing" instruction/data - it would a useless CPU if it did.

Secondly, it says there is a QPI link between every processor in a multiprocessor setup, and in a setup with N processors each processor has N links. This means this setup scales N^2, making it seem to be to be entirely impractical to implement for anything more than say, 4 processors, which requires 16 QPI links.

I mean, just thinking of the routing complexity of laying down the copper is giving me nightmares. Seeing as how Nehalem is suppose to scale to multiprocessor supercomputers, this doesn't seem right.

Wish there was a full article dedicated to this, since I really enjoy reading about processor architectures :-)

Cheers,
Steve

I'll point this at Zara and see what she has to say for herself :)

Bahaha. You did say you wanted Zara to address something :)

Though she may be a bit busy - she's on deadline with PCA and then jetting off to So-Cal for the NVIDIA Editor's Day.

No problems, maybe she can work it into next month's GEECCHIC :P
