I'm normaly a bit of a off the grid sort of person but I'd like put in my 2 cents worth on this one...

Firstly, I would be conserned if people got left out eg. one of the others mentioned NZ. The chance to see the best boxes in real life would be great, but I live in an area that city folk would normaly refer to as "the sticks" and would not normaly go to the "big smoke" to see a Hotbox likewise city folk coming here to see mine.

Secondly, others have made note that some entries are some what basic compared to others. I don't mind this as people new to modding are more likly to say "I can do that" and may just give it a try. This would be good, not only as it would encorage the Aussie give it a go attitude but would ultimatly increase the number of enties and who knows one of theses new guys may come up with something real nice (not to mention isn't the idea of encoraging others part of the Atomic way).

Doug :-)

i was a big fan of the hotbox section too, but would agree the quality was starting to get a bit mixed/low. i'd be just as happy with one every 2 or 3 months.

Agreed, every 3 months is a good idea. The hotbox section is what got me into modding and would love to see it back.

As reported a little while ago, we've decided to change the way we run Hotbox. As it was, we had a two page spread dedicated to it, and some months we were getting zero response, which kind of left us in the lurch; there just doesn't seem to be a lot of serious modding going on in the community at the moment...

A good decision IMO, I remember opening a few HBOTM spreads during '07 and thinking how un-special the winrar was. Not that the mods weren't of good quality workmanship, they were just meh. Case paint, window, neons, cables zip-tied outta the way, store-bought baybus, pretty standard stuff.

Now, Orac3 ( http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?CIID=25078 ) and SupCom by Defyant ( http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?SCID=18&CIID=71045 ) were what modding was about. Unfortunately the youth today are way too unmotivated to do produce something with such a high concentration of pure win.

That said, I'm looking forward to Live, and to seeing some really hot stuff.

I agree that the creativity seemed to be lacking in about the last year. There were a few diamonds amongst the rubbish, but a case with LED's, a window and a fanbus just aint that hot anymore - even if it is immaculate.

I am also a fan of "hotbox" and it was that section that encouraged me to build my own PC (not a hotbox) about a year ago now.

But the problem I find is that the cases on the market (what I means the ones available in my area) at the moment are all very boring. There are a couple that look like something out of the Transformers movie and everything else is a black box with a window in the side if you are lucky?

How about doing a section on where to get cool cases around the country in lieu of Hotbox?

My favourite Hotbox was ORAC3 - I wish I could buy that case somewhere.

To me the very essence of Modding is that you transform a case (if you even start with one) into something entirely different.

So there's no need to buy anything special.

Special is what you make it.

Being able to buy something that looks modded is what ruined the whole scene in the first place.

My advice is don't start with a case, start working on the skills to make something that stands out from the crowd.

Then you're not limited to what you can buy and assemble.

People who buy and assemble get that thoroughly bought-and-assembled look and its been done time and time again in the quest for a "HotBox".

(See below - last Atomic Hotbox, July 2007.)

I used to be a big fan of the hotbox section, it is one of the main reasons why I bought the magazine in the first place, and an addition which got me hooked on it. I will not hide the fact that the Atomic.edu got me started for a bit and further helped my decision as to what to study at University in my final year of High School (unfortunately transferring from Arts/Computer Science to Arts next semester XD).

But I have agree that the box mods were lacking though in the past year. Why not just have a "Hot Mods" section. The section is not just confined to computers but to other electronic goods, such as iPods (lol, put a hammer to it ftw ...), VCRs, DVD players, consoles, or even nice additions to computer parts that help them function better and have them include a description of what they did.. Something almost like a hobbiest hackers section would be cool.
