Let's Prove What Atomicans Can REALLY Achieve...

Hi I am Allison Reynolds, some of you may remember me from my previous roles as Forum Moderator or occassional Games Reviewer for Atomic MPC. Today I come to you with a proposition that I know will excite you as much as it does me.

I want to use the internet to prove the saying that everyone says, but no one seems to do, if one million people gave one dollar each there would be one million dollars for X charity. I KNOW we can do it!

On December 1st 2006 I will be launching a charity website to do just that.

Now you may think I want help by getting your $1 and you would be right BUT what is more valuable than the $1 is what I want you to do next. I want you to, as a good citizen of the internet, take the page address and go to the other places you visit on the net, other forums, email signatures, MySpace, MSN, IRC ...and invite others to join in the experiment to see how long it takes the internet to raise $1 Million Dollars a dollar at a time.

This thread is to start discussion about the upcoming launch and for you to ask any questions you may have about it. I have thought long and hard about which group of people I wanted to ask first to help me with this because I am a member of many internet communities (I also work for a huge multi-national company that could give me access to 100,000 people straight away) but I want us as Atomicans to kick this off because I love this community and know that we all love the internet and have the smarts to know how to make the best of this experiment.

I will be tracking on a google map where things go from the start in Australia and I expect to see like a virus us taking over the world as the word gets put out there. I know that YOU know people from all over the globe that would love to be part of this experiment.

Stuff you need to know to help

- This is an internet experiment (we CAN infiltrate the internet!)and the emphasis is on that rather than the charity aspect
- The money is to be raised for MS research and will be passed on to Foundation 5m here in Australia.
- Yes people can donate more than once if they wish
- Be good netizens, no nasty spamming or getting the experiment a bad name...Sure send emails to your friends and colleagues asking them to participate but don't be hit and run spamming places where you shouldn't.
- Be creative in getting the word out there, if you know people who want content for local radio shows, newspapers, TV then send them an article...or if you are too shy send them to me and I will!
- Have fun! This is not a job, this is the biggest internet experiment we have tried (even bigger than getting someone to take over from Chuck Norris's web role)

So please add your suggestions, comments and whatever here.

WE CAN DO IT!

Awesome concept.

Maybe go with a large, international charity - that way you're more likely to get non-Australians onboard.

The goal is not to get money for charity (well it IS) but for the right audience it will be just an experiment. Say the site gets slashdotted, would nerds, geeks and internet lurkers be happier donating to a charity, or proving a truism using the internet? I think they would be more interested in the truism, and for a dollar it will be a cheap way of doing it :)

Sounds brilliant Grammy. I have no doubt that it will be a success for you, and even less doubt that atomic will pull behind you and it will go wild.

Huge kudos to you for coming up with such an awesome idea.

And if anyone in the top tax bracket feels like donating, suggest they donate $2, coz that's tax-deductable, and they'll get half back anyway!

Hmm. True.

I reckon it'll work. Especially once it's up on Slashdot, digg and what not - which, of course, it will be when you consider the target audience. OCAU and PCPP would be good places to start off the advertising, though.

I'll put it in my tag on OCAU.
I wonder if we can make it spread like helpwinmybet.com?

Just speaking to iorek about this and he pointed out what is a cold, hard fact: donating a dollar online will be a pain in the arse. Say you decide to use PayPal - not everyone has that. I don't. You could NetBank it, but again, not everyone who would want to donate would have that.

Have you considered picking a charity, approaching them for, say, t-shirts and ID badges and jars and then having Atomicans in the cities, towns, wherever just wander around asking people to write their name down and drop a dollar coin in the tin?

I have selected PayPal as the ecommerce providor as it is the most used internationally. Paypal does come with its own set of frustrations but it does accept donations from those who don't have an account (but they have to be REALLY motivated).

Logistics covered.

There will be a set donation amount of $1USD - why US dollar? because Paypal takes 30c US from every donation (luckily for us the australian dollar is almost 30 cents less than an american dollar)

There will also be a free value amount where people can put whatever they want in (it defeats the purpose of the $1 premise BUT it will capture donations that will cover those people that can't, or don't want to, jump through hoops to donate)

Yes this would be a great scam BUT I have put my name on this and my name will be ALL OVER IT too to ensure that people understand that this is a real person (someone many many of you know).

The website name has been chosen and it will give people back a return for their $1 donation too :)

(for the record, i do think this is a FANTASTIC idea, really really terrific! :) )

great idea, but i have a couple of questions/thoughts...

From memory, isnt the lowest tax-deductable ammount $2 under australian taxation law?

And on another note, the "Childs Play" charity set up by "penny arcade" (on its website at least) is helping 2 australian hospitals (the "mater" and the sydney childrens hospital http://www.childsplaycharity.org/index.php )

best of luck grams! :)

great idea grams!

The only concern I have is around the payment logistics - I don't use paypal and a lot of people I know don't. Getting them to want to give the money won't be hard, but if it's difficult, many will lose interest.

/puts on thinking cap

there has to be a way around it...
