There are currently 31 machines folding for atomicmpc, though we were once as high as 100. I'd love to see us get back up to that level again, it would make us one of the top 10 producers for OCAU - rivalling some of school networks that Fold for them. For those wondering what this is about, it's a distributed computing project along the same lines as SETI@Home, except instead of looking for alien life forms, we're trying to cure diseases, including various types of cancer.

How to start
Folding doesn't drop your computer's performance, this is about using the wasted CPU cycles while your computer is idling while you're posting on atomic or web browsing. If you'd like to join, please download the applet here http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

Team number is 24
Username is atomicmpc

Background
Folding @ Home is a distributed computing project that is trying to find a cure for many different diseases, including cancer.
As each unit is processed by the participating computers, that computer is awarded points. Teams and subteams now exist competing to be the number 1 team in the world, all in the name of finding cures to these diseases.
OCAU have a Folding team that has battled with [H]ardOCP for the number one spot in the team rankings.

A couple of times in the past an OCAU member has posted here asking us to help our fellow Aussies out to beat back the Americans. And we've pitched in. A lot of atomicans have folded for OCAU and many still do. Now we atomicans fold under one subteam for OCAU, called atomicmpc.
It shows the folks at OCAU just how much we're prepared to help them out. It's a worthy cause, in my humble opinion.

Results
Stanford host webpages that list the current points for all teams and usernames (in our case our username is a subteam).

Several other websites trawl the Stanford pages and do their own statistical analysis. One of the better ones is Extremestats. Extreme has graphs showing progress and pastperformance, and also predict future performance. Extremestats can be found here:

The extreme stats are updated every three hours, and the Stanford site is updated hourly, between 5 and 20 past the hour.
In a nutshell - why fold?
Quoting the Stanford site:
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

I'm surprised that's possible at unis. I thought they'd have much tighter controls on them. Still, always worth it. I remember the office PCs in the department I worked for at UQ were all P4 3Ghz with a gig of RAM. For word processing....sigh. Much better use of them if they could be gotten folding! -----

Yeah I know Sneddo - but I figured that was pretty unlikely. :P Lovely as it would be. The Yanks would be owned pretty quickly if that happened! But if it even went on the standard desktops around there, it'd sure help!
The_Scrooptinat0r - check the links I provided. Read the FAQ at Stanford's site. It's a distrubuted computing project that works out why proteins fold. They turned it into a big competiton to inpsire new members and spur people on. We're helping OCAU get ahead of the Yanks at [H]ardOCP. -----
