Oh the humanity: How to kill a car

A woman rented a Citroen C4 in Budapest.

She drove from Budapest to Pécs.

Approximately 220km.

In 1st gear.

She thought it was automatic.

These are the insurance photo's of the engine and the bonnet.

On the bright side, at least it wasn't a good car.

Dozy bitch. It looks bad, but I'm sure that a lot of that is from the melted soundproofing on the bonnet.

animalica from GTX uncovered the truth:

Stupid Hungarians Fooled by Chain Email about Stupid American
A chain email that has crisscrossed Hungary this week has left some of its recipients feeling inappropriately judgmental, if not downright dumbass. According to the email, which came accompanied by four photos like the one to the left, an American tourist ruined a rental car after driving it 200 kilometers in first gear, having not realized that the car wasn't equipped with an automatic transmission.

The email went on to say that the barom ('idiot' American rented a Citroën from Sixt Rent-a-Car, and drove it from Budapest to Pécs at 80 kilometers an hour in first, making an "ear-hurting" noise and burning the engine to cinders.

For good or ill, however, the whole thing was just another piece of internet lore, though according to Index.hu, a very successful one. Sixt manager Gábor Dévai spent Monday trying to clear up the misunderstanding. "Tons of people called, someone called from the German [company] Siemens, all asking what happened, even my old friends emerged, who had received the letter."

In reality, the driver of the car, which was indeed rented from Sixt, had been using the car for several days when it suddenly burst into flames, and firefighters had to be called to put it out. The cause of the fire is being investigated. Dévai thinks the letter must have been written by an employee of Wallis Rt's Citroen repair service, where the car was taken from Sixt. Meanwhile, the driver in question was actually a Hungarian, and one smart enough to have scored himself an American passport.

When I was at Uni, one of my friends sold a car to some people. It had a new clutch put in 2 weeks before it was sold. After three days these people rang up complaining that the car didn't go.

Long story short, the Mechanic was happy to go and check it out as he was a good bloke and stood behind his warranty. He rang us back and said in his opinion these people had put the car into third and driven it round like and auto.

Again, woman driver.

Yeah, it didn't fit the story.

It wouldn't have lasted that long, and there is no way anyone could possibly be that stupid.

You'd be surprised. I get stories from some friends who work in tech support about the amount of calls they get with people asking where the "Any" key is.

you wouldn't be able to get the car up to a reasonable speed to realise you were in an automatic. I'm yet to see a car that can do 100km/per hour in 1st :P

That and the frightfully high rev's would give it away

The End: Thanks for clearing that up, looking at the bonnet I was thinking 'wow that actually looks like it was set on fire, not driven out in first gear'.

Because stop me if I'm wrong, but if a car was driven out THAT much in first gear, surely the engine would seize up before getting to that level.

I won't go into it too much, back to the topic, I won't be buying THAT car model.

Why not? The new Citroen C4 is an innovative car.

Though in Budapest, I don't know if ti would be a new one.
