Ban on assault weapons expiring in US

A 10-year federal ban on assault weapons expires today in the United States, allowing Americans to buy AK-47s and Uzis at their local gun stores.

The expiration of the ban at midnight has been sharply criticised, with one advocacy group running full-page ads in newspapers saying "Terrorists of 9-11 can hardly wait for 9-13". The ad included a picture of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden holding an AK-47 and cited an al-Qaeda training manual urging terrorists to obtain assault rifles.

Sixty-eight per cent of Americans support the ban, according to a poll released last week by the Annenberg Public Policy Centre at the University of Pennsylvania.

The 1994 ban, signed by then-president Bill Clinton, a Democrat, required reauthorisation after 10 years, and today's Republican-controlled Congress has yet to act. Republican President George W Bush has said he would sign an extension into law if passed by Congress, but Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry has blasted him for not doing more to make sure the ban is renewed.

"George Bush gave police officers his word that he would keep the ban," Kerry said, "but when it came time to extend it, Bush's powerful friends in the gun lobby asked him to look the other way. He just couldn't resist, and he said 'Sure'. He chose to make the job of terrorists easier and make the job of America's police officers harder."

The law prohibited the manufacture and distribution of 19 kinds of semiautomatic firearms that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition while allowing such guns already in circulation to remain there.

Several states have bans on assault weapons. However, the powerful National Rifle Association, which fights for gun-ownership rights, has said the ban did nothing to curb violent crime on America's streets.

The US Department of Justice said over the weekend that last year's violent and property crimes stabilised at their lowest levels since the government began the survey in 1973.

Last year, 24 per cent of all violent crimes were committed by an offender with some type of weapon, 7 per cent with a firearm.

Critics of assault weapons also have argued that the ban needs to remain in place to make it more difficult to obtain the guns that are capable of causing mass deaths and were used in such crimes as the 1999 killings at a school in Columbine, Colorado, and the sniper attacks on Washington-area residents two years ago.

Personally, I applaude this move (or more accurately - the lack of any moves). If every American citicen own an AK46/M16 and plenty of bullets, pretty soon we won't have to worry about them invading other countries. They'll be too busy clearing their own streets of dead bodies!

I suggest we provide them with as much heavy weaponery as possible. Just in case there are some Americans can't afford an assault rifle, I think we should buy a few truckload a give them away on the streets. Or create a ruffle to win more expansive weapons like Stinger missiles, flamethrowers and rocket launchers.

Encourage the costumers with buy one get one free deals, laybuys, and free give away grenads with every 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

I hereby estabish Operation Desert Peace to provide the Final Solution the American Problem. So start donating people!

Bah.

First of all the AWB didn't ban guns, it banned acessories to guns - folding stocks, telescopic stocks, flash hiders, high-cap mags etc. Guns that had these things before the ban were legal.

THIS GUN DOES NOT ALLOW ANY NEW WEAPONS

High cap mags and pre-ban guns were in high-supply anyways, this ban won't change alot.

THIS BAN DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO OWN A FULLY-AUTOMATIC GUN

The only full-automatic guns (besides LEO, FFL and mil) were owned before the full-auto/silencer ban. For a private civilain to buy one of these guns it has to be held by another private civilian before 1986 (i think that was the date of the ban) and they have to pay a $200 tax stamp per gun or silencer.

Any other questions on this ban, any other firearm bans or any general questions and i'll answer them.
