Grand Designs - ABC TV, Tuesday nights

Is anyone else watching this series?

It documents the trials and tribulations of rich British people who have decided to design and build their own unique houses at various places across Old Blighty.

Perhaps it's because I have a bit of the 'unfulfilled architect' and 'nutty engineer' genomes in me, but I'm finding some of the building projects totally fascinating.

It's astonishing what some seemingly sane people set out to build. Tonight a couple bought the side of a hill in the historical Georgian city of Bath for 300,000 pounds, and decided to:
* put a house they designed themselves
* which they had pre-fabbed in Germany
* in a HUGE hole they had to dig to level the site
* in mostly soft clay, with an underground stream in it
* which required 60 huge concrete pylons to hold up the hill above the site

This entailed two engineers in two countries, and three builders, two of which weren't in England. Because they started in the wet season, not only did the pylons keep collapsing, but the underground stream undermined the site and the neighbour's back yard and garden slid down into their hole.

And that was just the beginning of their problems...

Making it particularly interesting is the English host. He has a dry sense of humour, and a building background, and he's not afraid of telling the happy homebuilders how insane he thinks they are.

Anyway, I notice it's available on ABC.net.au for download, if you want to check it out.

Yeah, I've seen a couple of beauties on that show.

One was a typical nightmare build, writ large, very entertaining.

The other was a completely unique little joint painstakingly created in 18 months to be about as organic as a house can be, it was sweet.

Just finished watching it tonight.

Was a pretty amazing one. I love that elliptical staircase - although not so sure about 6 staggered floors coming off it.

That house construction technique looked pretty great though - house up in 3 days, and so energy efficient.

The staircase was great. But I find, even in my two-story bunker, that stairs become a 'mental barrier' to using all the various rooms. I think I'd have put a lift at one end, particularly for furniture moving etc.

But wasn't it amazing how the siteworks took 12 months, and the house was erected in just five days?

I really dig it...one of my personal faves that screen a couple of weeks back (I linked it in the dream homes thread last week too):

I'd love to see it completed fully, but from the sounds of it, that'll be a few more years away yet.

Nice start though...some really nice effects going on there and to say the woman designed it herself with no architectural background (and a fair few fuck-ups along the way) it's pretty damn impressive.

It used to be on around midday and I'd have to tape it. Glad its gone to a more time friendly slot. It's great seeing the amalgamation of seemingly incompatible design elements being pulled off successfully.

i love watching the show and big +1 for the host. he really tells it the people how it is. they are utter nutters. im sure many think the same way of the people building those houses.

as for the houses themselves. have to say some are really nice. its giving me ideas if i ever had the money to have a house built.

Gah! Here's the working link.

Comments as in above post.

EDIT: Hmmm...it appears to be truncating the end of the URL for some strange reason.

Add " -05_p_1.html " to the end of it in your address bar...or hit [REPLY] and copypasta, cause it appears fully there for some odd reason.
