I think i just lost.

I'll admit i work in a dead end job, with no real opitunity to progress up the ladder of authority. I work at a pool shop, im a factory hand/shit kicker, getting all the shitty jobs no one else wants to do, if im lucky ill get to go out on the road and do a delivery or pick up something that the factory needs.

I was working today mind you it was a half day 7:30-12:00 and i thought "I could do this for the rest of my life" sure it shits me to tears, its boring work at an average pay ($13 an hour). Now here comes the kicker...i want to be a teacher.

Its my dream job, i love ancient histroy and have been studying it since year 8 at high school. Its my passion and im not that bad at it. Relativly good marks at high school and near top marks at TAFE (where i am now). But while stripping down a pool cell for spare bits, i sorta just..gave up. Maybe i was kiding myself all this time that i would be able to achieve what i truly want. Like my title says...i think i just lost at life.

One key point i think i should make, is that i have always, ALWAYS struggled to find motivation to do anythign other than history and rugby. I dont know whats wrong with me :(

Am i just going through a phase?

Is this what the rest of my life is going to be? Questioning "what if"?
What does everyone else do for motivation?

Any and all imput is great...i just seem so lost :(

You're never too old to change career paths.

As the wise sages of Nike say, just do it.

Figure out what you have to do to get where you want to be and do it. Things won't go exactly according to plan, but you'll get there eventually.

I'm fairly sure you're pretty young (under 20?). I just started going back to Uni at the age of 27. I'll graduate at 31-32. So I know exactly how you feel about getting stuck somewhere you don't want to be and feeling like it's too late to change. But change is possible.

I thought I'd never work in IT, something I was and still am passioned about.

It took me 10 years, more than 15 jobs and 2 failed diplomas before landing a low-pay, long hours job doing what I love.

So how'd you end up cleaning pools instead of enrolling to teach?

I think we first need to make sure whatever caused that is resolved

Have you ever tried to enroll in a dip ed or education course. I think you need a degree for a dip.ed, right? You can still do education, over two or three years. You can keep your job, and do the degree part time. But you DO need motivation.

Go for it man!

I'm 27 and I quit my job at the beginning of the year to go to uni to do high school IT teaching.

Yup, what they said. if you're wondering what life will be like in the future then just look at it now. It'll be just like that, unless you do something different. History is fun, so is teaching, go do it.

I try to keep my eye on the goal - at the moment, it's completing renovations in a new apartment so I can have a REST for a bit in a nice place with my gf.

If I get jack of it all, I make a new goal for a while that's a lot easier to reach - like a day off where I replace renovating with a few drinks or a good book. :-p

Edit: Have a break if you feel like giving up. But stay at TAFE and bit by bit you'll finish and continue on to the next bit of your goal.

What is defined as "mature age" now-a-days?

Isn't that basically instant entry?
