I need a gun

Where's the best place to buy a gun in Sydney?

We've got a job on at work that would benefit from an actual physical reference, and it's my (vague) understanding that it's legal to buy a disabled gun with the firing pin removed and whatever other changes necessary.

To the concerned pacifists; fear not. This is only video game related :)

We're also looking for really good 3D models that are broken down into components and that have accompanying schematics (that's what we need even more so technically), but a real reference would go a long way.

Alternatively, if there's an organization that would loan/hire one out to our company that'd be even better. If it all involves a huge amount of red tape then I think we'll drop the idea, so any advice in that respect would be good.

I know one or two licensed people that have some antiques, but we need modern ones.

I know this is a pretty strange thing to ask.

I assure you my reasons are non violent and will harm no one.

In NSW you will need a gun license to buy that.
Not 100% sure but I think that even applies to replicas.

You can get just as detailed models using good source photos.

It's free too.

Probably it does, as you can still rob a bank with a replica.

It's really hard to get one. As Maxx said, you even need a gun licence to get a replica.

I tried getting one for a film some years ago, and it was nigh impossible. Called the police, called gun clubs, called replica gun shops, and if you didn't have a licence there wasn't anything they could do for you.

My advice - find someone who owns one legit, and ask if they can come along and let you use it. They'll have to be there, and it's probably best if you inform the police what you're doing with it.

If it's only video game related, by an aluminium replica... or rent one from a costume shop.

You need some sort of license because replicas are restricted items also.

All depending on what type you are after, an old style western six shooter of the more modern 1911 colt45. There are some places like speciality tobacconists who will have them in store (replicia versions), as for a real weapon I am not sure, you could try the local police station and ask them where they would suggest, just make sure that you have all the paperwork proving why you are after one.

Ok cool. Thanks for the info guys :)

I think this is enough for me to go on to get the guys here to drop physical idea.

I was hoping a disabled weapon would have different rules apply to it.

Cheers.

A firearm is a threatening object, whether it works or not, just think about someone pointing a gun at you, would you know if it was real/loaded/whatever?

xfu even a disabled gun has much the same rules as a real gun. You even have to keep it in a magazine (AFAIK, in Vic).

I know someone who has a disabled Walther PPK. But yeah its not so legal.

Call your local Gunsmith's/ Gun club. They would be able to hook you up with someone who could supervise access.

Are you guys looking at 3d scanning the guns so that they break apart into their components?

If its just weight and feel of them you want to translate, RING's do training replicas. As far as I know they are legal.

edit- they arn't functional at all, they are a combo of a plastic/rubber substance and steel

As awesome as that would be, we don't have a 3D scanner here.

It's mainly for hands on reference and a thorough understanding of how to put one together. We're coding up a simulator/game to the same effect.

The gameplay will just be for fun, so we can take a large degree of free license, ignore details, etc, but at the same time we want it to be really good and at least mostly accurate.

Best way at the moment is looking like finding people with the necessary gear, knowhow, and license. We'll get some demos, photos, video, etc...

Thanks again.
