uh-huh, well I'm sorry if my lack of excitement over lily plants producing more lily plants isn't quite epiphany that it obviously is for you. Show me 2 lilies producing a completely new and never before seen plant (that isn't just another lily) and I'm right there with you. ;)

but thats not how evolution works. Small changes over many generations not huge leaps. (generally)

It's fairly hard to argue with someone who's beliefs which are based purely on faith (which is why a religion is also called a faith :O) are set in stone. I'd just give up =P~

No dude, that's what the theory CLAIMS, if there were solid proof then there would be no argument. If you're happy to IMAGINE large changes occurring as an accumulation of very small ones then that's your call. As I said before, I dont have that much faith.

Everyone shouldn't forget that science is just rationalised religion... people have "faith" in evoloution... exactly the same way people have "FAITH" in Christ. science may be rationalised using flawed logic and inaccurate proofs maybe... BUT IT'S LOOOOOOOGICAL!! get it. got it good.
If you dont then you might be just a few of the lucky unbrainwashed 'freethinking radicals' out there that go against the ordered convention of science and say that there could be another 'THEORY' apart from the 'THEORY OF EVOLOUTION'...

""New species evolve when individuals obtain new genetic material that makes them well adapted to new habitats. Mutation is one way that organisms obtain new genetic information"

uh-huh, allegedly.

"The new species is a hybrid. It arose when two fairly common species of water lily, Leiberg's Water-lily (Nymphaea leibergii) and Fragrant Water-lily (Nymphaea odorata) interbred."

Wow! So 2 lily plants interbred and produced a *gasp* lily plant with features from the genetic traits of both parents! OK, I'm convinced *blows up the nearest I.D. building*.

(Warning, may contain traces of nuts and sarcasm.)

Two different species. I assume this would be like a human breeding with a different species of the genus Homo. Unfortunately none exist, but I'd bet it wouldn't always be genetically viable, or able to reproduce.

Or, the common example would be a donkey and a horse offspring. They occur, but are unable to breed, and therefor are not an evolutionary event.

As opposed to an even more ridiculous claim that some bearded dude in the sky created the world in a week, which is proven only by a book that's a few thousands of years old and has been translated a few times?

What about proof in explanatory power? I know that's not particularly scientific. But it is a very simple and elegant explanation. I'm sure William of Ockham would be happy with it.

Sometimes I think the press needs to leave reporting on Evolution and related topics to the Scientific literature. The ignorant misconceptions it often espouses only serves to confuse people and give ammunition to proponents of YEC and ID.

It's not just Atheists, Agnostics and what have you that believe evolution is the best explanation for the diversity of life on this planet and its development. Plenty of Christians are "evolution Nazis" too. I know a couple personally. Then there are the Hindus I know. They see no conflict between evolution and their belief system.

Science should ideally be Secular and not get involved with Religious faith. That's for the theologians. It's a true shame that so many people feel threatened by evolution. It doesn't disprove the existence of a God by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, it questions the literal word of Genesis 1+2, but there's a lot more to the Bible than Genesis.

The more I read about Creationism, in particular YEC and ID, the more bogus it looks. Largely, instead of trying to come up with a model that fits the evidence better, the typical strategy is to try and make evolution look impossible. The prevailing logic seems to be that if evolution doesn't work, their ideas are correct. What I haven't seen is an explanation for why.

Another tactic I've seen is to try and make the scientific evidence fit in with a literal reading of the Bible. In the process, it almost always makes unsubstantiated assertions and ignores valid evidence that contradicts them.

I can give plenty of examples if anyone wants and with some communication with one of my lecturers and the university library, I can probably find more.

I've actually proposed this in a big post several months ago.

I even gave evidence from the bible and from evolutionary theory that match up and allow both to co-exist.

http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=1&c=1&t=128350 went mostly ignored...

I love it how I make no mention of creationism or religion yet the fundamentalists feel like am I attacking them.
Well, I guess they would be feeling pretty insecure in today's society.
100 years ago, they would be comfortable, but not today

Well I am NOT a creationist, nor believe in God but I don't believe in evolution BETWEEN species, only evolution WITHIN species. As Director quite rightly stated - show him (and me) a brand new species in the order of a reptile turning into a bird and then I'll believe. Until true intermediate bird-reptiles and such are found I have a problem with classic evolution.
