Director trips on his own ignorance for massive damage.

Seriously dude, it would be like us saying 'well, if god exists, he should turn this pen into a gold bar' and claiming to have proven a point when it doesn't happen. Logical fallacies built upon bad assumptions never lead to anything useful.

I like brick wall threads...
especially with a dash of ignorance!

So they have made a fertile hybrid lily hey... It has already been found to have many great uses I'm sure but while we wait for that frog to turn into a bird over many, many generations, which surprisingly won't be much more useful but now we have a different species that we will need to protect from it's parents so as to breed the new species out too quickly... It is evolution happening very naturally.

umm right. I'm still waiting for someone to prove to me how lilies interbreeding is evidence that plants turned into IT engineers without invoking the magic faith of 'time'. If you have observed phenomena of this kind of thing happening then put it on the table. Or you can keep bleating about my ignorance because I just dont understand that it takes bazzillions of years for any meaningful changes to happen therefore by definition we could NEVER observe it anyway. Soz, I dont HAVE that much faith.

That point of course being that God didn't want to jump through hoops for you? ;P

And if evolution has been happening all the time even in the "dark ages", how then does it make a difference what Directors opinion is? I feel he is allowed to have it and you ppl don't need to be the opinion Nazis and try and verbally bash it out of him with shallow insults...

Now, I'm not a big time fancy lawyer, but I do believe that Director came in to this thread to do a thread shit, not the other way around.

Nice one.

I don't know, but maybe there are little changes in species like this. That doesn't mean the rest of popular evolution theory is true. It's not a package deal; you don't have to accept the whole lot. Pretty stupid.

people like jumping on the bandwagon. evolution is a good model of what MIGHT have happened, and i personally have never held much faith in creationism. BUT, i take every scientific "truth" with a dash of salt, given how often an "absolute scientific truth" has been disproved in the past.

remember how atoms used to work people?

Here's how it works in my view:

My dictonary tells me that ‘believe’ means “accept as true : have faith in, trust word of”. Now, all this connotes too much religion for my liking.

I prefer to apply a little "sniff test" to everything that’s asserted about what may or may not have happened, or will happen with regards to evolution.

As soon as I see the term “model”/"theory" in an article, I look for where actual observed effects prove the projections.

Disappointingly, more often than not with evolution, I’m left trying to draw my own conclusions, or take every assertion on trust because experiments are either impossible or are countered with equally "take it on faith" explanations (if you assume an Intelligent Designer).

Now, more often than not, evolution does seem to be the logical conclusion and that's why I believe in it.

But at no stage do I say evolution is "true". It might be, but then again, until the 50s we all thought the atom was the smallest particle known to man. And we were wrong because our theory was wrong.

<about to point out what a scientist says in the general press isn't necessarily science, or 'scientific opinion'>

<reads thread>

<gives up and goes off to do some work>

I don't like ID or creation as 'scientific theories', because I don't believe they are. At the same time, what a scientist says to a newspaper, isn't 'scientific proof' (even if such a thing did exist) of anything.

My usual (predictable & boring) response is, let's see what actually gets published in the literature.

Leonid: It brought a tear to my eye, seeing you posting about objective truth vs scientific assumption.

Not earth shattering or unusual, but you keep them science threads coming, and I'll keep being one of those hundreds of page views, even if I don't make a comment.

Hybridisation in plants is a very old discovery. Likely most of you ate a human made plant hybrid at some stage today. But we only discover and use what processes already exist in nature. I never did get all the angst over this sort of stuff...And I don't want to.
