Lookout, here comes a Hummer!

The cops remedy to violence in Melbourne is to drive around in Hummers.

WTF?

Victorian police will patrol Melbourne's inner-city streets in Hummers to try to curb violence.

The move comes after a 24-year-old Cranbourne man was left on life support after he was knocked unconscious at a Southbank nightclub early on Sunday.

Police have charged two men with assault over the incident. The police earlier said the man had died.
Police are also looking at setting up drunk tanks at trouble hot spots, and have promised to crack down on licensed venues that serve intoxicated patrons.

Police Assistant Commissioner Gary Jamieson says he hopes the measures will stamp out an increase in bad behaviour.

"We will continue to come up with innovative solutions to try and deal with what we say is a change and deteriorated behaviour of young people," he said.

"The idea of going to Hummers is that it's about trying to measure visible impact. So we've got to try and introduce something which might look different to our current fleet of vehicles."

Assistant Commissioner Jamieson says five Hummers will begin patrols next month.

Victorian Premier John Brumby says it will take years for violence in the city to be reduced.

"We're not going to get on top of this problem in a day, a week, a month or a year, it's going to take a couple of years to get on top of this problem," he said.

"It's going to mean tougher liquor licensing, it's going to mean more responsibility from licence holders, it's going to mean more responsibility, too, from individuals themselves."

Bit stupid if you ask me. Maybe the cops will think they're tougher in the Hummers.

I HATE hummers.

They're the most obnoxious car on the road, and how these are in any way supposed to curb the violence in the CBD is completely beyond me.

H3's eh? So basically a kind of boxy 4WD.

Seems quite pointless. But it isn't the silliest thing ever. Although I am hoping they make the cops wear Judge Dredd style outfits, to give a measurable visual impact. That would be sweet.

LOL @ Takoma

I thought cop cars were a deterrent. People think male cops will be compensating.

I don't quite understand this move by the melbourne police, then again most of them had revolvers up until not long ago.

That's a little retarded.
Surely a Hilux or equally large 4WD would have similar effect, be more usable, and cost less to buy and maintain?

Anyone and Hummers probably not... They're a fucking obnoxious car.

But on topic, I think this is actually a good idea. It's about being big and intimidating, which is why people buy Hummers ... They're big, they're intimidating, they're powerful. If you can mentally subdue people you have an easier time keeping control, which in this case means law and order. </keyboard-psychologist>

Hummer's will congest the CBD even further (they have like a 1km turning circle or something :P) thereby reducing the amount of people in the CBD.

As the number of people in the CBD falls, a multiplier will kick in making it fall even further as with less people in the CBD, less people will want to go there. This will happen until the population of the CBD is 0.

Ergo, there will be no more crime in the CBD.

I say it's a good thing, an increased presence does reduce violence, and even if every atomican here comes in and tells me otherwise, there are a lot people who LOVE hummers, even the H3.

Big, brash, easily seen, and will get more respect from the average rowdy punter than an XR.

Presence is a VERY effective method of prevention, simply being there, seen and known about can have a huge effect on peoples actions.

I do prefer more police on the ground though, numbers are lacking quite severely.

I think big F trucks would be better making presence than a hummer, F150s and F250s are cooler anyway.

A Hummer is just another Tourak Taxi that overpayed wankers buy to try and convey themselves as some sort of macho salt-of-the-Earth type guy.

When the truth of the matter is that about the only time the fucker gets anywhere near nature is the rare time he bothers to shovel up the dogshit in his backyard from that yapping Corgi of his.

Kinda cool the term is spreading interstate though :P

(For non-Melbournians, Toorak is an expensive suburb in Melbourne)
