Needs more limits or rules because the interpretation of a scene can be wide and varied as well as choice of content, genre and subject matter.

Otherwise yes I am interested but I need structure otherwise I will undoubtedly violate some unwritten law.

You violate several laws of nature already, but that just makes you awesome. :P

This is as much information as I'm going to give, this is much clarification as I'm going to yield, this is the only limitation you will have; A SCENE

That's it, the rest is up to you.

Scene: Length of a scene may trouble a writer. How long should a scene be? Some scenes may only be a few pages or even a few paragraphs; other scenes may be dozens of pages long. The writer should consider what is being focused upon in a scene to determine length.

As such trying to do anything with the limitation of a scene could be a rather strange because scene is part of a greater whole. Essentially from the description it can be inferred that write a story, take a scene and submit it. Perhaps the word short story should be used with a definitive beginning middle and end?

However don't get the idea I am trying to dictate terms just trying to avoid pitfalls that come from an abstract idea.

Scene:

A late model Mercedes was looking somewhat used, probably because it was on its roof on the side of a desert highway and it could only have gotten that way seconds ago because the front wheels were still spinning and the metal still ticking.

Over the crest it must have transitted, possibly airborne, came a flock of bikers, out for a run.

They pulled up immediately and kicked stands before running to see if they could help.

The Merc, being a Merc, was reasonably intact, if you looked past the paintwork, but not exactly showroom condition, and the doors were all in place and locked.

Shielding their eyes to look through the dark-tinted glass they could see a driver in the front, unconscious, perhaps dead, perhaps not, his belts holding him tight, and in the rear a female, not belted, laid in the footwell one arm draped across the seats, and, as one biker noted later, there was this pale ring of skin on her left hand index finger, a well tanned hand, someone had recently removed a ring....

The bikers went for tools and began working on getting a door open....

Scene exit...

Not an entry, just checking to see if that is what MrF has in mind. :)

I could write an entire script for a movie or novel out of that with backflashes and then pick up the story.

That what you have in mind?

Just for guidance.

and yes, competions can founder on rules, but we've run a few ok, even before polls appeared.

Not sure about it having to be from alts though, I don't have any and don't want any :)

Cheers

Ok, obviously our idea of 'a scene' can be subjective, but that's kind of what I want to leave up to the writer.

To me, a scene is a period in time focused in a single location. To others it could be a conversation in a cafe, a shooting at petrol station, a single rock in a lake over millions of years, or the ideas floating around ones mind.

The idea is to think about what 'a scene' means to you, how you can best write 'a scene', and just all round flex a bit of creative muscle.

please try to take this in a fun and creative spirit

This isn't a dick measuring contest, this is just a nice excuse to get people thinking, writing, creating, with perhaps the chance to earn themselves some bitch arse Kirin glasses :-)

Would give me something to read while running benchmarks in the labs in any case :)

What you posted was entirely appropriate :-)

If you use the movie analogy, a movie is made of many single 'scenes'. I just want 'a' [singular] scene [ http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/scene] [citation not needed]

Again, lets try not to take this ultra mega serious. That's not how I do things. This is just a nice excuse to create something, submit it, and see what happens.

The anonymity is to ensure partiality in judging, that's all. If you don't want to create an alt account, send it via email from an address I can't work out is you. Don't care. It's just so that people don't jump up and down screaming, the last thing I want is for a fun light hearted writing comp to be taken too seriously.

Yu get me?

All in the name of creativity and fun.

Once again,

Let's not get our nickers in a twist

This sounds like fun. I actually rather like the topic being "a scene" and am looking forward to seeing the different ways which people interpret it.

Oh, this is tempting. I love writing (though I'm utterly lazy about it), so...

Of course, by the time I've decided on a cool idea the date will have passed.

EDIT: Can we submit more than one piece?

I remember I used to have a really strange english teacher in year 7 that would refer to scenes as "moment essences"

glad we have a little bit of time, tried writing stuff last night, was pretty poor but I'll get there.
