Does it bother you if the current Government uses the Opposition's ideas?

Kevin Rudd's announcement of a new funding and performance model for schools is being criticised by some as being a 'copy' of the former Government's policy.

(Rudd isn't denying the allegation, responding that it's easy to come up with policies, but the former Government never actually implemented it.)

But my question is this: does it matter to you if the current Government uses the former Government's, or current Opposition's, ideas...?

From my point of view, the best idea is the best idea, and I don't really mind who came up with it. (I care more about whether the Government is actually looking for good ideas, and whether it actually implements good ideas.)

Fully. If the idea is a sound one - then does it matter who came up with it?

Only because the opposition are a pack of arseholes with fuck-all in the way of good ideas.

An idea's an idea; I couldn't give a rat's where it comes from.

to me if its a good idea why the f*ck not. who cares who came up with the idea. thats not the point. and thats should never be the point.

pity party politics is driven with "its our idea. why are they using it. can't they come up with their own idea" nonesense.

It wasn't meant to be sly. But re-reading it I can see how it could have been worded in a more neutral way.

Your wording's fine.

Policy is policy, but credit should be apportioned appropriately. Credit for idea, credit for implementation. Or blame, in the case of this policy. :-)

Implementation makes Rudd an action man, but not an ideas man.

We danced like new years eve
We danced from sheer relief
Everything must change

The people that you projected as
We were nothing of the sort it sold us all short
Put down the champagne
No toast to the legacy
And all the propaganda of prosperity
That's what a machine does and they don't need therapy
You turned us into a nation of haters
Far right appeaser
Believer in whatever get you leader
Dog whistle through the speakers
See who bites it

I noticed a hell of a lot of people liked it
An ethical choice is simpler if you price it
Conquer by dividing
That's why you admired him?
Unless pushed we would never have retired him
Fucken pirate history will damn him
Once it seemed like nothing can damage him
Crook, you got your arse played in Mandarin

Finally the King is Dead,
We cried off with his head
Everything must change, Everything must change
We danced like new years eve
We danced from sheer relief
Everything must change, nothing stays the same
Nothing stays the same oh, Nothing stays the same

Yeah cats I know are feeling just like the rapture
I can tell who this mood is failing to capture
It's like somebody finally did light that match up
And burn down the parliament, learned from the argument
Can't be non-partisan, when you're an artist
And you put your heart in it,
And that's not even the half of it
Like my man said, we're talking butter and bread
Better if his words were never uttered again
Mostly vindictive, who could have predicted
Just a few tax breaks to keep us all addicted
The dickhead dictator leader imitator
Made me feel immature when I said I hate ya
Did you read the paper the day after and hear the laughter?
I'll read it to you, it starts with M McKew and ends with you
No broader view from the people on your ship that you used to call crew
Huh! That's typical, now I guess it's difficult
For the type of person who only thinks of individual
No residual, you'll see our resilience
Take your bat and ball and head for the pavilion

Problem is, looks like another unimaginative prick has stepped up.

Rudd makes better noises; he's much better at not making my blood boil with rage, but there's not nearly enough fucken daylight between him and Howard for my liking.

I would like the government of the day to implement the best policy, not to ignore something out of hand because the other side thought of it.

At the same time I would hope that the core beliefs that got them elected in the first place are stuck to as long as it doesn't cause more harm.

Is this the same government that is scared of nuclear energy, even though it would reduce our greenhouse gas output by 80%?
Maybe they should steel that policy to?

In this particular case, it makes me furious, because education was one of the areas where I was most disgusted with the former government.

Why would it bother you? Government is just a game played by 2 players, neither of which has a lot of say on what actually goes on, this limits the number of choices they can make.

A challenge to a perceived consensus is a challenge to all the powers in human society, as it can take a person’s understanding of the world we live in, and flip it upside down.

As far as I'm concerned, sound policy is sound policy. I don't really care who thinks of it.

The last thing I want is a government who cuts off it's nose to spite it's face.

I can't imagine there would be that many people who would be bothered by the thought of one party using another party's idea (so long as the idea was sound in the first place of course); the problem is: if you wanted the opposition's policies then it makes sense that you would have voted in the opposition. If the current government is going to use the policies of the opposition, then there's an increased likelihood that the opposition will be voted in next time.

I think it's good that Rudd is, in this regard at least, attempting to avoid the "politics" of politics and taking on the best idea (as he sees it) that's out there, but hopefully he'll bring a few policies of his own out -- and implement them -- so that there's some reason for having picked him over the other guy.
