What's the deal with gift vouchers?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems to me that...

Gift vouchers came about as a more socially acceptable form of giving people cash. Because, for some reason, giving people cash as a present is considered uncouth. But it remains difficult to find a worthwhile present for others, so a lot of people consider that the maximum utility approach is best and that it is better to give the other person a form of currency to allow them to pick out the best present for themselves.

This lends itself naturally to these people giving other people cash as a present. But cash is considered a thoughtless gift.

Then gift vouchers came along and advertised as a socially acceptable present, and so a lot of people now use gift vouchers as presents when they can't think of anything to buy for others.

Does this strike anybody else as...incredibly stupid?

Maybe I'm wrong here, but...

Gift vouchers are not only just another form of cash, they are a WORSE form of cash.

So it's not socially acceptable to give others cash but it is socially acceptable to give them a form of cash that is worth less than cash, more limited in its usefulness than cash, and has an expiry date. And often it also costs more than cash.

In other words, given the choice between receiving the gifts:

1) $100 cash.

2) $95 gift voucher that can only be spent at a certain store (which you might never normally shop at) that expires in 6 months.

People would prefer the latter.

And that's not all. It seems to me that...

Actual gifts are more socially acceptable than gift vouchers. It's even more limited because there's a possibility you might not like the gift, while with a gift voucher you could buy what you like: the voucher is simply worth less than the cash equivalent, that's all.

So it seems to me that the more restricted we make the giftee's benefit, the more socially accepted it becomes. People don't seem to like to have options.

Now, this might seem like a minor thing, but if we can't get our priorities straight on something so simple - if we are so irrational on such a basic and widespread facet of our society - it's quite easy for us to fuck up our priorities on the more important things too.

Gift vouchers are useful for giving to people that would just buy drugs with cash.

Ah, now that's a very interesting point, Smadge. I hadn't thought of that.

It also raises another issue, then:

Does that mean we should be insulted that people who give us gift vouchers think we're drug addicts?

Some lols

I tend to give cash as gifts in weddings.
1. Because my friends that are getting married tend to already have what they need so there is no point buying them a toaster to go with the 15 other toasters they will get as gifts
2. I am lazy and leave the gift stuff till the last minute
3. I find gift registrars offensive, especially if I have forked out nearly a grand to get flights to the wedding and for accommodation.
4. reference 2, by the time I get around to looking for a gift off the registrar all the cheaper gifts are gone and there is no way in hell I am paying nearly a grand for something.

Also apart from weddings I don't do gifts.
Obviously I'll do a gift for the misses at xmas and her bday, also the same for my bro and parents.
I also don't expect gifts, I get them off the misses and occasionally the folks and bro.
I get a little offended if I get gifts of ppl outside of that. I would just prefer a beer and a happy birthday than gifts.

While in Isa last year Oddman and a few other boys took me across to the pub and feed me piss that is the presents that I like and that is how I would repay them.

and what girvo said I am hard to buy stuff for

Skull, gifts under most circumstances are used to compensate the host for their costs.

For example, when somebody throws a birthday party and invites you along, they should pay for the food and everything. Your gift then should be the value of what they would have spent individually on you. So its purpose is to make things even.

So if you throw a party where you pay for everybody's meals, it's only right that they give you gifts. If you don't want gifts, just make it a pay-your-own-way thing - but make it clear from the outset so they don't get you a gift and then end up double the money out of pocket.

Since when?

When parties are thrown for occassions such as Birthdays or Engagements I was under the impression gifts were given for THAT reason. A $40 Toaster does not compensate for the $$$$$ people often drink at those parties.

People think you're lazy, or that amount you gave them is too little or too much.

If it's "too much", they won't accept it :(

but then again, I've gotten vouchers for shops I never go into (clothing stores in particular) and have found some really nice stuff because of it.

I reckon you're much better off taking said person to a big shopping centre and then saying... you've got $100 / $200 / $300.... whatever the amount is.

Go for it.
