Should chess be an olympic sport?

Chess is a game of competition between two people, and it gets pretty fierce at the top level. Virtuoso wants Australia to be known for our smarts, and chess uses a lot of brainpower (presumably).

So maybe chess should become an olympic sport.

I think FIDE and the IOC are pretty chummy with each other already, and there's the chess olympiad where the top chess players from many countries go to butt heads.

The main argument against it, of course, is that it's not a game of physical exertion.

On the other hand, it's bound to be more exciting than these fighting competitions.

So why should or shouldn't chess become an olympic sport?

Theres already to many sports that shouldn't be in the Olympics let us not add more crap to it else it will tarnish the games. The Olympics is still one of the major sporting competitions I enjoy the most

It's not a sport! It's a game!

Even walking , that most stupid and spazzy Olympic event, has more of a claim.

It would be our luck if it ever did become one that Channel 7 would televise it all the time! Can't you imagine the slow-motion shots??!

They can certainly make it a sport if it helps 'em sleep at night, but I won't be watching it.

Only if people do medieval cosplay and beat the shit out of each other with weapons on an oversized chess board.

I'd vote to have Darts as an event before Chess.

Anyone who classifies Chess as a sport is probably a couch potato who thinks channel surfing during commercial breaks is an invigourating physical activity.

Top chess players are generally very fit, I hear. Something to do with the connection between body and mind. I know that Kasparov used to work out a fair bit before he started battling with Russian politicians.

I think Olympic events need to have some sort of physicality to them.

Chess is not the most physical of sports last I checked.
