I know. I spoke to an AFP gentleman and firearms laws are a state issue.

Are you hunting with this? If so what?

Edit: Sorry I see you say foxes. Nothing else? Goats and pigs are great fun and goat meat is delicious.

If you may hunt the medium stuff maybe consider a 243. A 223 is adequate but still a little light for mediums.

Foxes are a feral pest in Australia and New Zealand.

Foxes are plentiful throughout both urban and rural areas. They have a significant impact on grazing industries (spreading the abortion-causing Neospora disease in cattle, attacking newborn calves and mothers during childbirth and killing new born and young lambs and kids), on domestic livestock (in particular poultry), on endangered native animal species (five species are currently actively protected by fox baiting programs in the Shoalhaven) and on the general abundance and distribution of many small and medium sized ground dwelling native species.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who wants to shoot feral animals should be able to.

In general, foxes/goats/cats/pigs.

I already have a browning a-bolt 30-06, and i'm really looking for something a bit smaller and lighter to fire.

In that case the .223 is a no-brainer :)

30-06 is a bit more powerful than a 308, so i wouldn't consider a 308.

Can even load it up with lighter pils for smaller prey, that would be too big for the 223.

Agreed. With the 30-06, you've got a wider range of projectile weights available, right up to 250gn, whereas the .308 maxes out at 190gn.

I ended up getting two..
.223 Tikka T3 Lite w/Bushnell 6-18x50
&

Mossberg 802 .22LR w/BSA 3-8x40AO (cheap and crap, yes I know, but it's *incredibly* light, has a 10 round mag, and hits what I point it at :)

Sound like nice choices Erolit but haven't had any firearms for a few years now. I had given up hunting etc when the new laws came in so then I promtly got licenced and bought a few handguns and rifles :{) Eventually it started getting to expensive in time and money to keep it up :{(
Most rugers were plain but nicely functional. My fav was a sako .243 heavy barrel, oh so sweet. .243 covers most any Oz critter (bar buff, rarely insta kill & pidgeons, they explode!) .222 handles smaller stuff at most sane ranges nicely.
Happy eco saving. (Yes hunting nonnatives is ecofriendly you ignorant wannabe know nothing pseudogreenies. Also culling overpopulationes that would otherwise starve is humane.)

The sako would have been a lovely gun, very similar to the Tikka I have now I suspect (Tikka being owned by Sako, having to a large degree the same components). I'm just wishing I had my 30-06 in Tikka rather than a browning. The Tikka is a fantastic gun to fire :)

Just a p.s. Reloading, the only way to go for the serious firearms user. The time spent studying the subject then fiddling with components is well worth it. Not just for cost saving but the chance to fine tune your ammo to weapon, game and field conditions. Of course the need to mark the various batches you may be carrying can not be overstated and the use of a comprehensive record book (leave space for field notes) is also extremely important.

Tikka. nice

mossberg. if the 802 is the one i'm thinking of, i've seen some not so crash hot reviews on it.

Wouldn't all this have gone quite a bit over your budget?
