Pick a rifle for Erolit

And what is the Leupold scope worth, in relation to the rifle? :P

what, about $500?

Personally though, i'd rather a rifle be chambered in a commonly used round. .223 is always accurate, as is .308. If need be, i'd accept 7.62x39, due to the abundance of ammo that can be found for it in china, africa, and probably south america.

.223 is my first choice though. End of the world circumstances and all.

edit: she's certainly a compact 'scope for what it is! But you pay for that, too :P

I paid a pretty penny for the scope, but im more of a spend big get quality kind of person to begin with.... $700 I ended up paying for the VXII leupold.

.223 is a great round and and if you get a good barrel with the right twist you can easily go out to 1000 yards with it if you wanted to some younger kids who shoot fullbore use .223 rifles at those ranges with no worries so it's a great calibre, very versatile and cheap.

7.62x39 on the other hand is a .308 round with half the punch, and you can't import ammo privately so I say meh to that I reload my ammo at 40 cents a pop. pretty bloody good for a big round like a .308 if you ask me itll be even cheaper for the .223

Yeah, if reloading ammo, the little bottle of the .223 is certainly an advantage...

if you load her up with 70gr bullets she's capable of dealing with moderate sized prey, but obviously if you're using 70gr+ bullets, you'll want a higher twist rate than if you're shooting little 40gr bunny zappers.

70gr is plenty for a .223 and bigger proj then that and you'll need to use a compressed charge to get good distance and speed but yeh, .223 and .308 great versatile calibres I know erolit probly isnt looking for a $$$ rifle like what I suggested but it's food for though if he or someone has the coin to do so, i can vouch for it's terrific performance.

Ofcourse, if you're looking for a very 'all round' cartridge, there is the 243, which will throw a smaller proj at lightning speed, and still be acceptable(just) for small deer.

But personally, i find the 243 a bit much of a compromise... a bit of a nothing round.... it tries to do too many things at the same time...

After a few hours of armchair shooting I think I will settle on a .223. I would certainly consider a vanguard but probably wouldn't stretch the budget to the Sub-MOA vanguard. I was also looking at the Tikka T3 Lite, which comes in around the $1000 mark and seems to have a great rep.

so R700 SPS in .223, vanguard in .223 or Tikka T3 lite in .223...

I'll spend a day at the range next week and have a shoot of a few different .223's and see what I like the feel of.

I think you should either get the second one in this link:

or

Get this one:

Not too sure on Price for either though. May be a little outside your budget.

I'm fairly sure that bullpup weapons aren't allowed here in Australia.

I think that they're allowed only if the section forward of the trigger is atleast 16.5" in length.

However, laws may have changed since i checked last, or i could have misinterpreted them to begin with.

The laws vary state by state, but I've just checked with the AFP ('phone call) and was told that generally, military style firearms and bullpup design firearms are prohibited.
